New(ish) fan to the sport; Has the discourse amongst fans always been this hostile?

I started watching around 2015 when Kyle Busch won the championship. I’ve always seen the occasional smack talk to other fans about their favorite teams or drivers, and even to NASCAR as an organization itself. But now with the sport changing the playoff format and the negativity around the Next Gen car, I see nothing but arguments on other sites and apps debating which side of the isle is better.
